CTN (“Compagnie Tunisienne de Navigation) was created in 1959 in order create to new regular routes for Tunisia and its business partners. The first cargo route was established with Marseille; later on, connections with Italy and Spain were added.
The first ferry boat service was created during the middle of 1970: it worked on weekly basis and sailed on the route Tunis – Marseille – Genoa.
In the last few years, CTN renewed its fleet, changing the oldest ferry boats; this change was made also to contrast the strong competition of this sector. In June 1999, the new ferryboat ”Carthage” sail for its maiden voyage starting from the port of La Goulette; then, in May 2012, CTN introduces its newest ship, called Tanit, used on the route Tunis – Genoa – Marseille.
Tanit, the new ferryboat, substituted the old ferry, the Habib; Tanit and Carthage are now the two ships on duty for CTN. The Tanit is one of the biggest ferryboats sailing European seas: 212 meters long, 30 meters wide, has a maximum capacity of 3.200 passengers and 1060 vehicles; it reaches a maximum speed of 27.5 knots. The creation of this ship costed 177 million euro to CTN. The Tanit has one peculiar characteristic: it has two separates engine rooms to ensure the ferry can still sail in case one of the two engines stops for a malfunction.
